What is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy is a way in which people in romantic relationships can come to improve their communication, to clarify their feelings for one another, to resolve problems, to put the past to rest, and, sometimes, to discover if their relationship is sustainable or not. Couples therapy is appropriate for both heterosexual and same-sex couples.
Most couples who seek treatment want help resolving their conflicts. In my practice, I try to create a safe, secure and comfortable environment, which allows couples to discuss the kinds of issues they might normally be reluctant to talk about. I try to be fair, objective and neutral, allowing each person an opportunity to talk and listen to their partner. For many couples, the presence of an unbiased third party can work as a much-needed reality-check. More importantly, in the presence of the therapist, people tend to be more well-behaved, sensitive and responsive to their partners' needs, rather than simply losing their temper and lashing out, as they might do in private. In the therapy session, therefore, the couple can learn to have productive discussions about things that might normally lead to heated and confusing arguments.
However, couples therapy works only if BOTH members of the couple are committed to resolving the problems in their relationships. Couples therapy cannot work as a "last resort" in a failing relationship. Nor can it work if only one member of the couple is committed to therapy, and the other is reluctant or dubious. It definitely cannot work unless there is a policy of total honesty during the session. It is not a substitute for divorce mediation.
If we feel comfortable about working together, you will be invited to attend five sessions. Both members of the couple must attend each session. If, after five sessions, I believe that the relationship is not a sustainable one -- that is, not mutually supportive and fulfilling -- then I will inform you of my decision, and the therapy will not continue.
